Helping to protect Scotland’s rainforest
Lush, misty and atmospheric, Scotland’s rainforest is comprised of ancient native woodlands, river gorges, ravines and open glades, dappled by sunlight, dripping with moisture, and richly carpeted with mosses and fungi.
This breath-taking landscape supports a wealth of inhabitants including the red squirrel, pine marten, otter and even the elusive Scottish wildcat. Alive with birdsong, these woodlands provide homes to scarce and threatened birds including wood warbler and pied flycatcher. A single ravine may contain as many as 200 plant species, which is comparable to the richest tropical rainforests.
Having once covered much of western coast of Europe, Scotland is now the last stronghold of this internationally important habitat, but even here only about 30,000 hectares remain. These remnant woodlands are small, fragmented, and isolated from each other, and are in real danger of being lost. Choked by invasive plants, impacted by climate change, and threatened by pollution and disease, the threats to this habitat are numerous, and we must act now before it is gone forever.
