It was love at first sight for Freedom Brewery and Sheffield’s Peddler Market, a dynamic beer and street food event that takes place on the first Friday and Saturday of every month at its home in Kelham Island. From humble beginnings — a horsebox turned bar — Peddler Market has become somewhat of an institution for the city’s creative community, attracting an estimated 8,000 visitors per month to its lineup of street food, craft taps, live music, DJs and local, independent market traders.
“We originally traded as The Hop Box, heading down to different street food events in London and often doing the return journey all in one night,” says Peddler’s co-founder, Ben Smith. “As the street food scene grew, we recognised there was a market for similar events in Sheffield, so Peddler was born - in a car park no less! The early days were brutal, we were purely learning by doing and Peddler quickly outgrew its surroundings. In December 2015, we officially moved to our permanent home at a disused industrial warehouse in Kelham Island, where we’ve been ever since.”
Back then, the 7,500 square foot warehouse was a forgotten relic of Neepsend and Kelham Island’s industrial heritage, but Ben says the Peddler-goers absolutely buzzed off the backdrop. “After more than a decade, The Peddler Warehouse now combines industrial vibrancy with a modern, cultural venue,” she says. “Moving to Kelham Island gave us the home we needed to grow, so much so that now The Warehouse also hosts festivals, regular weddings, parties, corporate events, exhibitions and awards.”
Peddler recently celebrated its 10th birthday, and to mark the occasion, hosted one of its biggest markets to date. “We curated a 'Legends Lineup' of Peddler street food veterans, we had a Deya tap takeover, collaborated with Neepsend Brewery on a 10% stout and invited amazing musicians, including esteemed DJ Coco Maria,” says Ben. “We also produced exclusive merch with the help of one of our pals from Sheffield band, While She Sleeps, and even gave away a year’s supply of Freedom Lager to one lucky winner.” Lucky indeed!
While Peddler’s Sheffield warehouse might be the best place to groove through the night, pint in hand, the company also runs bi-monthly events in Chesterfield, Leeds and Wakefield, so keep your eyes peeled for a great day out.
