The regard in which Basqueland is held by the international beer community says something of the uncompromising quality and technical nature of its brewing. The brewery has its stellar team to thank for accruing a cult following of beer geeks, becoming a sought-after collab partner, and an incredibly well-distributed brand across Europe. Co-founder Kevin Patricio says that 2024 has seen the brewery point its abilities in new directions.
“This year we were able to develop our low and no-abv options. We released Basqueland Lite last Spring, which is a premium American Pale Lager. It’s light in body and even low in calories but maintains all of the flavour you have come to expect from Basqueland. It’s light, crisp and classic. Great for summer or when you want something between all or nothing. Then there is HERO, our 0.5% alc. Hazy IPA. We went for a hazy option here because it tastes more like the real thing. You get that hoppy aroma, juicy mouthfeel, and refreshing finish with none of the alcohol. It’s no secret that the market has moved this way and it’s important to provide something for our consumer whose tastes are changing but also have something for that novice craft consumer who wants lower alcohol."
Kevin says Basqueland’s goal for 2025 is to continue supporting the craft movement and grow the sector in Spain, where the market share of craft is 1%.
“That is untenable economically and spiritually,” says Kevin. “We know the more traditional beer drinker is happy to substitute macro lager for our Santa Clara Lager. Once they taste the difference they are thirsty for more. That will open the door to the rest of our core range and eventually to our limited editions. We need to get the word out and keep spreading the gospel of the merits of quality craft beer.”
What advice would Basqueland give to its younger self? “I have to quote Ferris Bueller,” says Kevin. “'Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while you could miss it.’ Oh, and watch your goddamn cash flow!”
